Rev. Michael Shaffer is the new Garner United Methodist pastor

Rev. Michael Shaffer

GARNER – For the Rev. Michael Shaffer, church is more than just a building. It’s about making connections.

Schaffer is pastor of the Garner United Methodist Church. His first Sunday in the pulpit at Garner was July 21.

“Ministry can happen anywhere,” he stated. “It’s not just about the building or even worship on Sunday mornings although that’s very vital and important for spiritual growth.”

“I often tell people, I didn’t enter the ministry to push papers. I got into the ministry to connect with people and help them to learn how they connect with God and God can connect with them.”

A native of Mingo, Iowa, Michael Shaffer began his college education at Grandview College. He transferred to the University of Iowa and graduated with a Bachelor of General Studies Degree in 1991. He received his Masters of Divinity Degree from the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary in 1996.

Pastor Shaffer may be new to the Garner congregation, but he is very familiar with this area. He was pastor of the Methodist churches at Klemme and Goodell from 2013 to 2016.

He most recently served congregations at Lenox and Clearfield, Iowa.

“There are always challenges when coming to a new community,” he remarked. “You still have the challenge of getting to know the people and have them get to know you,” he said. “It's also very exciting. I have little bit of an advantage, since I know the area very well having been here before.”
