Ray and Reece run at SE Polk

Track and Field season in North Iowa was scheduled to begin last week, but somebody forgot to tell Mother Nature. With snow on the ground and daytime highs in the mid 30’s, all track meets on the schedule anywhere north of highway 20 were cancelled or postponed. For athletes hoping to qualify for this year’s Drake Relays, opportunities to do so are fading fast.

GHV coach Kelsey Edwards has two individuals that she believes can make the cut for this year’s Drake event. To give them a chance at qualifying, Edwards brought her top distance runners Ray Cataldo and Reece Smith to a track meet at Southeast Polk on Thursday.

“Due to the unexpected weather, we've had to be creative with practices,” noted Edwards. “We've utilized our indoor facilities and the parking lot and roads when possible. We've been practicing for two months now and have only ran in one meet, the ISU Indoor in March. The boys are looking forward to being outside and are ready to compete.”
