2017-2018 was a devastating end for the West Hancock girls’ basketball team.

Falling short of a State Tournament berth, the loss fueled the Eagles who built themselves up to be an even stronger force for 2018-2019.

“It was something that just didn’t sit with them,” coach Paul Sonius said. “They wanted it, they went out and got it.”

The team set their goals, step-by-step.

First, win the Top of Iowa Conference West.

Second, go undefeated in conference play.

The team didn’t get to check off the goal for an undefeated regular season, but they reached their biggest goal that year.

They made the Class 1A State Tournament.
