One dead, one injured in explosion at Britt golf cart business


BRITT - An explosion at Miller and Sons Golf Cars in Britt, left one person dead and one injured, Wednesday, July 31.

Gary Olson, 62, died of injuries sustained from the explosion.

Mark “Skip” Miller, an owner of Miller and Sons, was also injured.

Hancock County dispatch received a 911 call at approximately 9:12 a.m.  The Britt Fire Department, West Hancock Ambulance Service and law enforcement were called to the scene at 2197 James Ave.

According to a statement from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, a preliminary investigation found the explosion was caused by workplace accident from a metal barrel igniting that was used to collect oil.

Olson was taken by ambulance to a local hospital and then life-flighted to the University of Iowa Hospital, where he died as a result of his injuries on Wednesday afternoon. An autopsy will be performed by the University of Iowa Hospital Pathology Department.

Miller currently is hospitalized at Mercy One North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City with a head injury, which was the result of a fall in an attempt to provide aid to Olson.

According to Hancock County Sheriff Scott Dodd, an investigation is ongoing. The case has been referred to the State Fire Marshal’s Office.
