GARNER – When the school is back in session next August, youngsters at GHV elementary can enjoy recess time brand-new updated playground equipment.

Dozens of volunteers helped install the units for the upper elementary, lower elementary and preschool play areas, last week.

Volunteers from Stellar, the Garner Rotary Club, Clear Lake Bank and Trust, and Reliance State Bank, the 5 Loaves, 2 Fish program, and many individuals, assisted engineers with the installation or supplied snacks.

“We couldn’t have done it without them,” said Mike Meyering, GHV elementary principal.

The next steps are pouring concrete footings, followed by pouring the rubber safety surfacing.

The colorful Miracle playground equipment was purchased from the Boland Recreation company of Marshalltown. The total cost of the project is $191,500, which will be paid from the district Physical Plant Equipment Levy account.

As an added bonus, the old playground equipment will see continued use at the Hancock County Fairgrounds at Britt. Travis Schleusner, fair board member, hopes to have the equipment installed in time for the 2018 Hancock County District Fair.
