Music festival and “Families of the Fallen” team up

FOREST CITY – A new non-profit organization to assist families of those who have lost their lives in service to their country has joined forces with a local music festival.

Families of the Fallen, Inc. is the idea of Andy Klein. Klein, a veteran and a deputy with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, serves as president of the organization. Klein other volunteers held a press conference announcing fund-raising efforts on Friday, Feb. 8 at Forest City.

Klein runs security during Forest City’s annual Tree Town Music Festival. His idea was to use the festival as a way to reach out to families who have lost a loved one in the line of duty.

He explained that military and law enforcement communities are “a really tight-knit family.” That closeness extends to fire and EMS personnel as well.

About a dozen people worked on forming the non-profit following the 2018 festival.

The next step was to approach the festival’s new managers about supporting and promoting the charity. Tree Town organizers were quickly on board with the project.

“So here we are now,” Klein said. “We’re at the point where we’re to start fund-raising to make this happen. We’ve had great support so far.”

The immediate goal is to raise $30,000 to bring some area families to the 2019 festival.
