The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura girls cross country team enter the season with a new coach.

            Kaitlyn Aberson.

The first-year coach will go through those similar challenges that all new coaches go through.

“I’ve really been relying on those older, more experienced girls to lead a young squad,” she said.

The Cardinal girls will have 12 running this season, four being returning letter winners and only one senior.

Abby Christians, who placed 12th at the Class 2A meet last season, makes up that veteran leadership.

She is seeded eight in the state in the preseason.

The team is primarily made up of underclassmen, which Aberson aims to build a base off of.

Being the junior high track coach in spring helps bring some familiarity with the freshman this season.

Aberson said that there’s some very talented runner in the underclassmen.

“I’ve seen [the underclassmen] overall not be very intimidated by those stronger, older runners,” Aberson said. “I’ve seen them come into their own.”
