Basketball coaches typically expect to see growth from their teams during the holiday layoff, but it was difficult for GHV girls’ coach Matt Erpelding to make a fair assessment of the Cardinals’ progress in their return to action last week. The Cards resumed their schedule facing two very strong opponents, hosting undefeated North Union on Friday before meeting an equally talented Algona squad on Saturday.

The league-leading Warriors appear to be on their way to a conference title after completing the first round of league play without a loss. North Union gained control in the early minutes of Friday’s game at Garner and never trailed on the way to a 39 – 73 win.

Jillian Heitland led the Cardinals with 15 points and four rebounds. Jayden Frank followed with seven points while Mara Anderson added six points with five boards and five assists. Maddie Williams and Morgan Ryerson chipped in four and two points respectively while Mykenzie Darg made good use of her time off of the bench, scoring five points.
