Opening week for the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura boys’ basketball team had two entirely different games for the Cardinals.

After coming out hot at home on Nov. 27, the Cards took it to North Iowa in an 83-40 win.

Landon Dalbeck led the team with 22 points closely followed behind by James Betz with 21.

The season started off on a good note.

            Friday was not the same.

The Cardinals traveled to Forest City for the second game of the year, and were held at bay in a 48-38 loss.

Coach Jake Young said the Indians came out with a good game plan against his team.

The Cardinals struggled to move up and down the court and had trouble playing their transition-based offense.

“They were able to take away some of the things we wanted to do,” Young said.

Young said that it was also a combination of his players not executing their game plan.

Rebounding was a big factor for Young, pointing out that the Cards gave up eight offensive rebounds to the Indians.
