Garner-Hayfield-Ventura sent three cross country runner to the Class 2A State Meet at Fort Dodge on Saturday.

Senior Reece Smith tasted victory for the first time, winning the meet with a time of 16:00.7.

This marks the first-ever individual state title in cross country for GHV.

Smith came into the race with the same determination he’s had all season.

“He led the whole race,” coach Jeff Short said “At about the two-mile mark, he just completely pulled away from the guy.”

Second-place finisher Joe Anderson of George-Little Rock/Ce would finish almost a full 22 seconds behind Smith, nobody was going to stop him from destiny.

“That state championship has eluded Reece a few times and the whole Smith family a few times,” Short said.

The first-place finish bookends Smith’s high school cross country career, as a freshman he was a part of a team title GHV won.
