GARNER – Patrick Carew of Garner is one busy guy this summer. When not lifeguarding at the Garner Aquatic Center or waiting on customers at Java 18, Carew is hawking newspapers in the Des Moines Playhouse production of Disney’s “Newsies.”

Set in New York City, “Newsies” is a musical comedy-drama that tells the story of struggling newspaper hawkers (newsies) who go on strike to force change in the way newspaper moguls Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst compensated their newsboys. The musical is inspired by the real-life newsboy strike of 1899.

Carew is one of 19 “newsies” in a 37-person cast. The musical is under the direction of David Kilpatrick. Megan Helmers is director of choreography.

“I knew that Des Moines Playhouse had a very good reputation by putting on very professional, high-quality shows. I wanted to be apart of one for a new experience,” said Carew.

Auditions were held in April 22-24. Dance and character callbacks were held April 23-24.

Prior to auditions, Carew attended a dance clinic to learn the complex dance audition material.

He was relieved and excited to learn he made the on April 27.

He credits the theatre and musical techniques he from teachers Elizabeth May and Jason Heitland at Garner-Hayfield-Ventura, for helping him to land a part.
