West Hancock girls’ basketball made a statement to the Top of Iowa West on Friday.

Coming off the heels of a dominating 82-23 win over Belmond-Klemme on the return from winter break, the fifth-ranked Eagles marched into No. 11 Bishop-Garrigan’s gym to take a 57-53 victory.

West Hancock started off well on the play of Amanda Chizek, who scored the first eight points.

Foul trouble in the second quarter kept Chizek out of the action and allowed the Golden Bears to take a 30-27 lead at halftime.

Coach Paul Sonius drew up halftime adjustments and a new plan of attack.

Scoring busted open for the Eagles as Kelly Leerar laced in a pass mid court to Maddie Eisenman for three-point shot.

It was non-stop as West Hancock outscored Bishop Garrigan 17-7 in the third quarter.

“We did our little offense that we figured up at halftime and we ran it pretty well to perfection,” Sonius said.
