Class 2A No. 2 West Hancock returned from winter break with matches against Newman Catholic and Manson-NW Webster in Britt on Friday and Saturday.

The Eagles won by a chunk of points in each matchup, defeating Newman 62-23 and Manson-NW Webster 80-37.

It would appear that both victories were convincing on paper.

Coach Paul Sonius didn’t feel the same in their first game.

He’s happy to get a victory but he said his girls struggled in playing defense up to their potential.

West Hancock committed 18 fouls in the game.

“A lot of those fouls were caused because we didn’t move our feet, we didn’t get in front of them,” Sonius said.

The Eagle players just didn’t perform fundamentally, often finding themselves out of position and bumping into each other.

The pressing and fast-pace style of Newman also added to the chaos a bit.
