The West Hancock girls basketball team finished off their special season with a trip to the Class 1A State tournament at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

The Eagles made it all the way to the championship game against first-seed Newell-Fonda.

Ultimately, West Hancock would fall to the undefeated Mustangs.

Despite the sting of the loss, which surely the players will never forget, the Eagles should be proud of what they’ve accomplished as Class 1A Runner-Ups.

            This is their tournament story:

Quarterfinals: West Hancock 67, North Mahaska 54

The second-seeded Eagles entered Wells Fargo Arena with their white home uniforms to face North Mahaska who wore red.

The two teams set out to prove they could out work the other as each offensive possession was a footrace to each end of the court.

“We talk about getting out as fast as we can,” coach Paul Sonius said “We want to run them.”

North Mahaska did well in the first quarter to keep up with West Hancock, the Eagles leading 22-18.

But as it’s been for most of the season, West Hancock’s physical presence wore on the Warhawks.
