Council okays tiered management plan for Parks and Rec

GARNER – The Garner City Council approved a proposal for a three-tiered management structure for the Parks and Recreation Department, Nov. 27. Director Kaitlyn Sorenson and Assistant Director Josh Banse recommended adding the adult pool manager position to the management team.

In their written request to the council, they noted that with the hiring of an adult pool manager, the department can run more efficiently and effectively.

“In the summer of 2017, having an adult pool manager allowed for the [Veterans Memorial Recreation Center] and other programs to be run more efficiently,” they said. “Now with a full management team, we will have one person covering each of our big items.”

The director (Sorenson) will take care of VMRC, including billing, memberships, programs, scheduling, etc. The assistant director (Banse) will manage and direct baseball and softball, field prep and park maintenance.

The pool manager position will continue to be a seasonal part-time one. The pool manager will work at the pool doing daily tasks, ordering pool and baseball/softball concessions, pool scheduling, training and managing lifeguards. Kaylea Schulze was the pool manager this past summer.
