City of Kanawha decides against allowing chickens in city limits

Kanawha City Council headed up a big vote on May 8.

The vote was to approve the first reading a proposed ordinance of amending city code to allow hens to be raised in city limits.

The vote for approval failed by 3-2; Ray Basset, Judy Vander Ploeg and Shirley Baker voted nay and Robert Zeigler and Tammy Countryman voted aye.

Much feedback was given to the council before the vote including a petition signed by 31 residents encouraging the council to vote no.

Some citizens voiced their concerns over the effect of housing chickens within the community.

One person stated that she had discussed the issue with a member of the Iowa Agriculture Council who stated that those who work for Hawkeye Pride Egg Farms couldn’t be around other chickens for fear of transferring diseases.
