GARNER – The Garner Chamber of Commerce and Duesey Days Committee recently announced that Jim Jass, Garner, will be the Grand Marshal for the 2018 Duesey Days Parade.

The Duesey Days Committee recently surprised Jass with the announcement of his selection at the Garner TownMart, where he volunteers his time. Considering his work experience, the committee chose “Pumpin’ up Garner” for this year’s Duesey Days theme.

“Jim was the manager of the Hancock County Coop oil for many years and helped grow the co-op to what it is today,” said Chamber of Commerce President Deb Schmidt. “Jim has always been very community-minded. If ever the community needed anything he was always there with both help from the co-op and himself.

Jass was fire chief for the Garner Fire Department for many years.

“Even after his retirement he continues to help the community by making sure the flags are up in Central Park when needed and delivers meals on wheels,” said Schmidt. “In his spare time, he still loves to pump your gas at Townmart and clean your windows. He does not consider this work, but socializing. Jim not only loves giving himself to the community but is really Pumpin’ up Garner.”

Mark Ricke, Chamber of Commerce board member remarked, “Never have I seen Jim without a kind smile on his face. If you see him, you will most likely see his wife, Sharon, by his side, volunteering her time as well.”

The 38th annual Duesey Days Celebration is July 13-14, 2018.
