Cards compete at TIC Wrestling Tourney at Osage

Garner-Hayfield-Ventura wrestling competed at the Top of Iowa Conference tournament in Osage on Saturday.

The Cardinals finished 10th as a team with 82.5 points.

GHV didn’t wrestle all of its starters.

The seven wrestlers who competed on Saturday placed.

Notably missing from the lineup was Cole Dakin and Nick Billings.

Dakin endured a rib injury prior to the tournament and Billings is dealing with illness.

Both are likely to wrestle at Sectionals on Saturday.

The others that were kept out was a decision by the coach looking at the seeding and strength of opponent.

“We didn’t feel like they were going to benefit from this tournament,” coach Cory Jenniges said.

160-pounder Jared Shaw was the highest placing wrestler for team defeating West Hancock’s Justin Ausborn by 10-2 major decision for third place.

Shaw had aspirations to be a TIC champion, but fell to Zach Williams of Osage in a 5-1 decision.

“It’s tough coming back from not getting what you wanted,” Jenniges said. “You got to learn to let things go and get the next best thing.”
